Postali News

Posted On: By Postali

Every month on our blog, we highlight a Postalian from our Columbus, Ohio office. This month, let’s get to know Dakota Williams, an SEO Specialist.

In 2017, Dakota joined Postali as an SEO intern following his graduation from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business with a B.S. degree in Marketing. Dakota was quick to learn the intricacies of a law firm SEO strategy. His strategic thinking, strong work ethic and willingness to jump into any project made him a perfect fit for Postali. In August, we were happy to offer Dakota a full-time position on our SEO team.

Dakota is quickly becoming one of the Google Analytics gurus around the office. He’s also one of the most active members on many of our Postali Slack channels, contributing valuable insight on SEO strategy and Game of Thrones alike.

Q&A With Dakota

Explain what a typical work day looks like to you.

A typical day starts with waking up and reading some SEO blogs and checking my email to see if there is anything that I need to respond to. After that, I go about my morning routine and head to the office. I’ll either grab Starbucks on the way in or make coffee once I get to the office and then open up our project management tool, Wrike, to see if there is task with a close deadline that I need to work on. If not, then I typically try and do a few tasks for each client that I work with. Lately this has been a lot of pre-website launch tasks, as we have been busy with new clients. At lunch I go to the gym a few blocks away from the office and come back and eat lunch at my desk, typically while returning emails or working. Then its right back to working on tasks that I didn’t get to before lunch.

What project have you enjoyed the most so far?
I really enjoyed doing work for my first new client website launch. I liked this the most because I had never really seen what work goes into setting up a website, and this was the first project that I had a hand in working on from start to finish.

What’s the most challenging aspect of your job?
Trying to balance all of the work that can be done for clients. There is always something that you can work on, and when there is no task with a clear-cut higher priority level, deciding can be a bit difficult.

What’s your favorite thing about working in SEO?
Forming strategy. I like getting to analyze all of the different data sources that we have, and then look at our sites and see how they interact and see if you can piece together the puzzle.

You accepted your full-time offer after your internship with Postali. What made you want to stay with the company?
Definitely the company culture. I’ve said it previously in an SEO blog post, and I’ll say it again now; It is something special to look forward to coming into work every day.

What advice do you have for anyone who is looking into a career in SEO or digital marketing?
Always keep an open mind and talk to people in the industry. I didn’t know too much about SEO before I got involved with it, and it’s a surprisingly pleasant blend of things that I like. Without keeping an open mind to considering it as a career option, I would have never thought that it would be something I would enjoy.

What’s your most-used emoji?
The crying laughing face. I’m a pretty positive positive person and I like to laugh.

What’s your favorite Starbucks drink?
Iced Green Tea Latte, with extra matcha, and 2 shots of peppermint syrup.

Your go-to lunch at the office?
A salad from Chipotle. It’s a healthy option for after I workout. If I need comfort food though, it’s definitely Hot Chicken Takeover.

Favorite place you’ve traveled?
Internationally, it’s Italy. For the United States, it’s Charleston, South Carolina.
